Career Opportunities

UNDP offers a wide range of career opportunities depending on your competencies as well as your career objectives. There is no standard career path within the organization as such. You may chose to specialize in either development services or operational services, do a combination of both, or start with development services first and then decide to move to operational services. You may chose to specialize in one of the practice areas and work solely as a policy advisor or combine your specialization with a career in management.

The following job families are the most common for JPOs as well as other professional staff.

Coordination

If you wish to pursue a career in the field of UN cooperation and coordination and/or humanitarian coordination, you may have the following opportunities depending on the required competencies for the post, your background and years of working experience.

• Policy Specialist with the UN Development Group Office (DGO)
  (typically L/P3-5)



• Resident Representative/Resident Coordinator in Country Office
  (typically P5 - D2)

Development Services

If you wish to pursue a career in programme, you may have the following opportunities depending on the required competencies for the post, your background and years of working experience.

• Programme Specialist in Headquarters, Regional Centre or Country Office (typically L/P3-4 or ALD 3-4)



• Assistant Resident Representative in Country Office
  (typically L/P3-4 or ALD 3-4)



• Deputy Resident Representatives in Country Office
  (typically L/P4 - D1)



• Country Director in Regional Centre or Country Office
  (typically P5 - D2)



• Programme Specialist with a national, regional or global programme/project (typically ALD 3 -5)

Advisory services

UNDP regularly recruits Policy Specialists/Advisors in areas falling within or relating to our five practice areas. Policy Specialists/Advisors are normally experts in their specialized field.

If you wish to pursue a career in policy, you may have the following opportunities depending on the required competencies for the post, your background and years of working experience.

• Policy Specialist/Advisor with BDP/SURF or a national, regional or global programme (typically L/P3-5 or ALD 3-5)

Operational services

If you wish to pursue a career in operations, you may have the following opportunities depending on the required competencies for the post, your background and years of working experience.

• Finance Specialist/Advisor in Headquarters or Regional Centre
  (typically L/P 3-5)



• Human Resources Specialist/Advisor in Headquarters or Regional Centre (typically L/P 3-5)



• Procurement Specialist/Advisor in Headquarters or Regional Centre (typically L/P 3-5)



• Deputy Resident Representative - Operations in Country Office
  (typically L/P4 - D1)
