Learning for Your Career
Organizations are made up of people and while the organization is responsible for making learning opportunities and time available to its staff members, staff members are responsible for grasping those opportunities and plan for their learning.
Your learning is a key part of your career development, as you need to invest into your life-long learning in order to remain competitive and current in your professional field or in your organization. Your learning is linked to your performance, as you need to continuously develop your capacity to achieve results and contribute to desired organizational results. You are responsible for your own learning, and you should always keep in mind that you are the only person who can use and leverage your ability.
herefore you should take the time to keep yourself abreast with changes and new developments in your sphere of work, and what will be the learning needed for you to remain competitive. Have detailed discussions with your supervisor or regional thematic focal point to identify possible learning activities and prepare a learning plan in connection with your annual RCA process.
Developing Internal Staff Capacity through Learning
The aim of learning at UNDP is to enhance the capacity of the people, who make the organization, to provide competent and effective support to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. In the context of ongoing UN Reforms and UNDP's leadership changes, the Learning Resource Centre has launched a focused learning strategy that will benefit not only UNDP, but the entire UN system and the clients the Organization serves in the development community. The 3 key factors that drive the learning strategy are the Organization's priorities, learning needs of staff, and global best practices in learning.
All staff are provided with universal access to learning commensurate with their roles. There are four primary curriculum domains:
- Practice and advisory
- Programme management
- Operational & professional
- Coordination
The four levels of target audience are: Community (to develop awareness), Practitioner (to develop proficiency), Specialist (to develop expertise) and Leadership (to develop strategic focus). For more information...
The eight strategic priorities that would enable learning to enhance individual and organizational effectiveness are given below in a diagrammatic representation:
