10th JPO Workshop - Bangkok, 19-23 November 2007Governance and Conflict Prevention & Recovery| Objectives | Agenda | Participants | Reading Material | Evaluation |This JPO workshop is organized by the JPO Service Centre in cooperation with the Oslo Governance Centre (OGC) and the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR), with the support of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Democratic Governance is the cornerstone of UNDP'ss work (both as an intervention in its own right and as the most appropriate support to governments to create the conditions for poverty reduction and sustainable development). However, in the last decade UNDP has provided support to governments and communities in unstable situations and also provided support to addressing the challenges of post conflict reconstruction. As a result, UNDP has substantially scaled up its work on crisis prevention and recovery and developed unique approaches, and responses that address the specific needs of countries in danger of crisis or recovering from it. While the assumption has been that the entry points and programming tools of UNDP can be adapted to crisis countries, today there is an increased awareness in UNDP (and within the international community) that effective programming in these situations requires both a thorough understanding of peace and conflict dynamics and a review of responses to ensure they are sensitive to those dynamics and contribute to prevent violence and/or peace building. In line with this, UNDP is working to bring these democratic governance and CPR practice areas closer together in order to ensure greater relevance and effectiveness of its programmes in conflict affected countries.
