The 8th JPO Workshop took place in Dakar on 23-27 January 2006. The theme was Decentralised Governance and Development. 30 JPOs working with UNDP, UNFPA, UNIFEM and UNOPS participated to the sessions.

Objectives of the workshop:

  • to strengthen JPOs' knowledge of UNDP's global policies, lessons and experience on Decentralisation, Local Governance and Urban/Rural Development;

  • to provide an opportunity for JPOs to reflect on, seek advice and share their own experience;

  • to inspire and motivate JPOs to do things differently when designing and implementing country programmes;

  • to get hands-on experience of local projects for reflection-in-action;

  • to come up with a product, a policy or practice note, that can be shared globally;

  • to support networking and coordination among JPOs, resource people and others.

Furthermore, the workshop was preceded by an e-discussion between the organisers, BDP/DGG and the participants. Through this participatory approach, JPOs had the chance to contribute directly to the design of the agenda and communicate their needs and ideas to the resource people and facilitators.
