Presentation

"In today’s world, the private sector is the dominant engine of growth – the principal creator of value and managerial resources. If the private sector does not deliver economic growth and economic opportunity – equitable and sustainable – around the world, then peace will remain fragile and social justice a distant dream. That is why [I] call today for a new partnership amongst governments, the private sector and the international community".

Mr. Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General, March 2004

"I believe that it will be the building of the private sector that will be critical next challenge in development – very much the way that democratic governance was so much the challenge for the past decade."

Mark Malloch Brown, Administrator, UNDP

As the above quotation indicates, for this workshop the theme was: Partnering with the Private Sector.

There has been a lot of discussion recently within UNDP on how the UN can increase its support and collaboration with the private sector as a tool for global poverty alleviation.

This workshop therefore aimed at familiarising participants with the overall setting of globalization and corporate citizenship, and outlining methodologies and practicalities of engaging with private sector.

The focus of the week was on:

  • Why do we want to engage with the private sector?
  • Why does the private sector want to engage with us?
  • How do you partner with the private sector? (the process and rules & regulations)
  • How can we improve private sector development? (Business development services, the enabling environment and microfinance)
  •
