Key statistics

  • More than 60 million people have been infected with HIV since the epidemic began two decades ago. In 2001, it claimed an estimated 3 million lives.
  • Around the world, close to 20 million people have died of AIDS, 4 million of them children.
  • Although Africa has 10 % of the world's population, it is home to 70 % of all people living with HIV. In 16 African countries, more than 10 % of those between 15 and 49 years old are infected with HIV.
  • Since the beginning of the epidemic, 13.2 million children under the age of 15 have been orphaned by AIDS.
  • UNAIDS/WHO estimates show that in 1999 alone 5.4 million people were newly infected with HIV.
