What happens to former JPOs?
As highly qualified professionals with hands-on experience in international co-operation, former JPOs spread around the planet to work in different kinds of areas. Whereas a large percentage remains in the UN system, the rest continues a career in NGOs, bilateral organizations, in research-related areas or in the private sector. This creates a rich pool of experienced professionals around the world. And the JPO Alumni Association keeps them connected!
Who are we?
The JPO Alumni Association promotes a lifelong connection to the United Nations' activities. More specifically, it aims at:
- Making use of the talents and resources of former JPOs to advocate the United Nations values;
- Fostering a community spirit and knowledge sharing among former JPOs;
- Facilitating job search for former JPOs.
Launched in September 2003, the JPO Alumni Association (JAA) groups 1800 members and is growing steadily.
Membership of the Association is free of charge open to all former JPOs/APOs/YPOs/AEs of the UN System.
How to keep in touch?
In order to facilitate networking and a sense of community, the following directories are made available:
- the JAA-Net is a moderated mailing list intended to strengthen knowledge-sharing and cross-fertilisation activities among the members of the JPO Alumni Association;
- the JAA directory is a powerful search engine grouping numerous contact details and work-related information on the Alumni members;
- the Directory of former JPOs who participated in the Programme since its creation in the mid-sixties;*
- the Directory of former JPOs / current UN staff who participated in the Programme since the mid-sixities and have remained in the UN system. It includes data such as nationality, grade, current organization, duty station, title and Business e-mail;
- launched in September 2007, the UN JPOs Facebook group is an informal platform with over 800 members, aimed at strengthening the networking opportunities and at fostering a community spirit among current and former JPOs.*
* Please note that no private information such as e-mail addresses or telephone numbers will be provided by the JPO Service Centre without the express consent of the person concerned.
Other JAA Services
The following services are also available to the members of the JPO Alumni Association:
- the Post-JPO employment opportunities section offers selected employment links;
- the JPO CV / Talent Management Roster allows former JPOs to store their CV in a database that is advertised by the JPO Service Centre to various potential employers;
- the JPO stories section will gather short interviews/portraits of current or former JPOs;
- the Travel advice section offers useful links for travellers.
How to become a member?
Are you a former JPO, APO, YPO or AE? Please send your registration request to the JAA Co-ordinator, who will provide you with username and password to access all JAA services.
What's next?
At this stage, the JPO Alumni Association represents a simple entity administered by the JPO Service Centre, offering some web-based services free of charge. However, the spirit of the association and its services are shaped by its members, the former JPOs/APOs/YPOs/AEs of the UN System. Therefore, please help us to provide you with a vibrant and successful Alumni Association that can remain responsive to your needs. Remember to keep in touch!
