Vacancy Announcement:
14 Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Positions with the United Nations
funded by the MDG Achievement Fund open to nationals of eligible developing countries

 

The United Nations are looking for young professionals from eligible developing countries (see list below under “Conditions of eligibility”) who can combine passion for development with technical and managerial services in an international multi-cultural setting and who have the capacity and commitment to be trained in a hands-on approach to poverty reduction and development. Under the supervision of a senior staff member, JPOs are directly involved in the design, monitoring and implementation of UN programme activities.

As a Junior Professional Officer (JPO) you will be hired as a professional staff member paid accordingly and entitled to international benefits covering living expenses, travel and relocation as well as additional benefits if serving in a high security level area.

These JPO positions are sponsored by the MDG Achievement Fund and the standard length of contract as a JPO is two years based on satisfactory performance. Being a JPO provides young professionals with further opportunities to pursue a career within international development.

Conditions of eligibility:

All Candidates must:

  • Be under 32 years of age on the date of their application;
  • Have completed a university education at Master's degree level in a relevant area of study;
  • Be committed to the UN values, highly motivated, professional, have good interpersonal skills and be able to adapt to a multi-cultural environment;
  • Be fluent in English, Spanish or French (according to the language of the duty station). Fluency in other UN languages can be an asset and may be tested in the interview;
  • Be a national of one of the following eligible countries:
    • Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Cambodia, Cap Verde, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guatemala, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nicaragua, Niger, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Senegal, Sudan, Syria, The Philippines, Timor Leste, Tunisia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Viet Nam.
  • May not apply for a post in their own country.

Other information

  • The Initial offer of appointment is one year, renewable for up to a maximum of two years.
  • Grade/Step: first year: P2/1, second year: P2/2 (as per UN Contractual Reform effective 1 July 2009).
  • Deadline for receipt of applications is Tuesday 14 July 2009 (midnight, Copenhagen time).

The MDG Achievement Fund

Funded by the Spanish Government, the MDG Achievement Fund is a United Nations resource that finances and supports national efforts to accelerate progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Its work aims to:

  • Positively impact the status of the MDGs and tackle inequality;
  • Increase national ownership and civil society participation; and
  • Improve aid effectiveness by building on the collective strength of the United Nations
The MDG Achievement Fund supports almost 130 joint programmes in the areas of gender equality, youth employment, economic governance, culture and development, conflict prevention, environment, child nutrition and private sector.

Tips and recommendations for your online application:

It is important to include a detailed description of the main responsibilities and tasks you carried out during each period of employment.


  • Training courses and international experience:
    Please mention any relevant training courses that you have attended under question 24 or question 30. Please remember to indicate in question 30 any international experience you may have.
